Is Dan Romer in line for an Emmy for his work on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

Dan Romer is one of the biggest composers in television, having created incredible pieces for titles like Maniac, Stranger Things, and Station Eleven. He has been nominated for various Emmys and was recognised for his work on the latter. However, the only major win of Romer’s career was when he picked up the Grammy for producing Say Something by Christina Aguilera.

There’s a chance that this is set to change in the 2026 award season. Romer recently produced the score for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which was praised by critics.



Romer’s Score Built on What Came Before
Romer has established himself as one of the most diverse composers in the business, having worked on various genres over the years. It may have felt daunting to follow in the footsteps of Ramin Djawadi, who wrote the iconic themes of Game of Thrones. However, Romer managed to take what had come before and offer something new.

This was especially true when the original theme kicked in at the end of the fourth episode. It began in a similar fashion to the Game of Thrones title theme, but added new elements that gave it a life of its own. Throughout the series, Romer’s score borrowed elements from its predecessors, but also offered lighter-hearted melodies in parts. There was even some Western-inspired whistling, which fit perfectly with the wandering theme of the show.

An Excellent Addition to the Game of Thrones Franchise
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the third entry in the Game of Thrones franchise, and it has easily lived up to the magic of the original. Ever since the success of the first George R. R. Martin adaptation, there have been attempts to expand the universe in new ways. This first came in the form of related games such as the Telltale Games title and the Game of Thrones UK casino game. The latter is still prominent in the iGaming market today, highlighting how the franchise is still popular.



When Game of Thrones finished airing, HBO scrambled to come up with spinoffs that could keep the franchise alive. So far, it has turned to adapting other pieces of source material from Martin, with House of the Dragon an adaptation of parts of Fire and Blood, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms based on the author’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.

Due to its January release, the latest Game of Thrones spinoff is likely to be considered for various categories at the 2026 Emmy Awards. It earned a strong reception from fans and critics alike, and it would be surprising if it didn’t win anything. Indeed, along with Romer potentially earning a nomination for best score, there could be nominations for categories such as Best Series and Best Actor.

Many would say that Romer should have easily earned an Emmy for his work before now. With A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, he may finally get the recognition he deserves as one of the best composers in television.
