In the gaming world, where visual spectacle often takes center stage, the unsung hero of the player’s journey is in the auditory landscape. For award-winning composer and music producer
Shengyuan Li, video game scoring isn't just a job – it's a vibrant canvas for unparalleled creativity, deeply rooted in a lifelong passion for interactive storytelling. Li, whose career has seamlessly blended classical training with modern electronic sensibilities and cross-cultural influences, he champions the unique demands and endless possibilities that game music offers.
Fusing together a classical music background with contemporary games is part of his talent. "I think one of my strengths is being able to blend different musical styles, especially orchestral and electronic elements," Li explains. "Modern video games require music that feels cinematic, but also fits the energy and pacing of gameplay. I work with orchestral writing, electronic sound design and modern production techniques."
He provides an example: "In a combat scene, the music helps create tension and intensity, which makes the battle feel more exciting. When players are exploring the map, the music might be lighter, more relaxing, or more melodic, which encourages curiosity and makes the world feel inviting to explore."
As both a composer and producer, Li's workflow shows the integrated nature of modern game audio production. "I start with understanding the direction from the developers," he said. "I first look at what type of game it is and what function the music needs to serve at that moment. That helps me start exploring the overall musical style."
Born in China and now based in Los Angeles, Li's cultural upbringing shaped his musical identity. "I grew up listening to a lot of Asian game music and pop culture soundtracks, which often have strong melodies and a lot of stylistic variety,” he said. “Studying and working in the U.S. exposed me to Western film scoring traditions, orchestration, and cinematic storytelling."
His talent has not gone unnoticed; Li secured First Place in the 2023 Indie Film Music Contest, was awarded Fourth Prize in the Lei Cine International Scoring Competition, and placed in the Top 10 finalists of the 2023 Berlin International Film Scoring Competition. Most recently, he won an award at the Xunguang Microcosm Film Festival 2025 for the short film Sue’s Art, recognized for its artistic achievements, including its compelling score.
He approaches music not only as a composer, but also as a producer. “This helps me deliver polished, production-ready music that integrates smoothly into modern game pipelines,” said Li. “At the same time, my electronic music background brings a strong sense of experimentation and creativity, allowing me to explore fresh sounds and push beyond traditional scoring approaches."
