Indie icon Mitski has officially announced her eighth studio album, "Nothing’s About to Happen to Me," set for release on February 27 via Dead Oceans. Following the cinematic sweep of 2023’s The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, this new project promises an even deeper immersion into narrative songwriting, backed by a full live band and orchestra.

A New Narrative World

The album centers on a reclusive protagonist inhabiting an unkempt home—a woman who is viewed as a "deviant" by the outside world but finds absolute freedom within her own walls. Mitski wrote all the songs and performed all vocals, reuniting with long-time producer Patrick Hyland and mastering engineer Bob Weston to maintain the lush, organic sonic through-line of her recent work.

Lead Single: "Where’s My Phone?"

The lead single, "Where’s My Phone?", serves as a fuzzed-out rock introduction to the album's psychological landscape. The track arrives with a visually stunning, "emotionally kaleidoscopic" music video directed by Noel Paul. Inspired by Shirley Jackson’s gothic novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle, the video features Mitski as a paranoid protector of her home, battling an absurd influx of human intruders in a style that shifts from playful to pandemonium.

Adding to the creative rollout, New Yorker cartoonist Emily Flake has contributed a custom illustration interpreting the frantic energy of the single.

Technical Craft and Legacy

The album features arrangements by Drew Erickson, with orchestral sessions recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound and TTG Studios. The recording incorporates the same touring ensemble that supported her record-breaking The Land tour.

Mitski’s return follows a monumental year. After the global, four-times platinum success of "My Love Mine All Mine" and the 2025 release of her concert film Mitski: The Land, she continues to expand her artistic footprint. She is currently writing the score for the musical adaptation of The Queen’s Gambit.
