Natalie Williams delivers soulful authority at the Royal Exchange

The Marlene Brunch at Engel, the atmospheric cocktail bar nestled within the City’s majestic Royal Exchange, has quickly established itself as a vibrant Saturday fixture. Named after the legendary Marlene Dietrich, the series transforms a routine meal into an act of theatrical indulgence, pairing vintage glamour with a rotating cast of performers. The recent slot on November 22nd featured the darling of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Natalie Williams, who brought her signature blend of soul and jazz to the Grade I listed building's mezzanine.

Williams, known for her powerful vocal control and easy stage presence, delivered a warmly curated set of soul-pop covers, including the likes of Michael Jackson and Paul Simon. Backed by a tight trio on drums, bass, and keys, the band matched her energy with an easy groove that perfectly suited the relaxed Saturday afternoon atmosphere.

The Marlene Brunch Experience

The performance was perfectly complemented by the brunch service, curated by Engel chefs Samantha Williams and Lorena Tomassi. The menu offered a choice of two or three courses (£45 and £50 respectively), including the house signature Steak and Eggs and the decadent Lobster Roll. I would highly recommend the roasted sea bass, which was expertly served with cauliflower, samphire, and a delightful yuzu and soy glaze.

The accompanying drinks menu featured the option of free flowing Spritz or Fizz for an additional £30, well-worth the extra for the Bellini and Rossini alone. This combination of sophisticated dining and rich tapestry of live music, set against the luxurious 1920s Berlin-inspired backdrop, delivers the ideal afternoon of artistry and cuisine.
