Queer Canadian-French alt-pop provocateur Maryze is making waves with their highly anticipated UK debut single ‘False Icon’, dropping Thursday 22nd October via Hot Tramp Distribution. Produced by Skyler Cocco, the track is a dazzling collision of 80s synth drama—think Eurythmics with a flash of Gaga—and the campy grotesque of cult body-horror cinema, captured in striking polaroid artwork by Italian director Andrea Calvetti.
Inspired by the 1986 cult film Society, ‘False Icon’ is a glittering yet scathing takedown of Hollywood’s two-faced sirens. Maryze slices through the glamour and illusion of celebrity worship, exposing the toxic culture beneath while confessing the allure of its shine. Written alongside Skyler, both artists channel their lived experiences of seduction and deception into a track that’s as biting as it is magnetic.
Maryze explains: “When I moved to Los Angeles, I noticed some artists surrounding themselves with fans rather than friends, using people for clout under the guise of community. That’s where the lyric ‘Your friends, your fans, your captives’ came from. Skyler and I commiserated over having noticed this same trend, and wrote the track to call out manipulators in the industry who create the illusion of connection to lift themselves up without regard for those around them. We drew from the drama and camp of both 80s synthpop and body horror films of the era. In the visualizer, we built a character of this 'False Icon' (played by Sadie Scheufler) who lures people in with glamour, only to reveal the emptiness and ugliness beneath. Sadie and I developed the creative concept together and I’m blown away by how she brought it to life – she was terrifying on set.”
With a stormy-sweet sound that fuses electronic beats and fiery bilingual lyrics, Maryze is quickly cementing their place as one of alt-pop’s most boundary-pushing voices. After touring Australia and New Zealand with Alex Cameron, going viral with their single Langue, and performing at SXSW, Maryze has already shared stages with Boy Harsher, Princess Superstar, and Desire. Their latest release marks a thrilling new chapter—one that promises to shake up the UK alt-pop scene.
