Indie rock veterans The Wombats are back with their latest single, ‘X-Rated,’ a playful track packed with the chaos and charm that has defined their sound for nearly two decades. The new song arrives ahead of the extended version of their sixth studio album, Oh! The Ocean, which is set for release via AWAL Recordings on December 5th.
‘X-Rated’ dives into the anxieties of love after the initial honeymoon phase has faded. The track perfectly blends introspective, honest lyrics with rhythm-driven, irresistibly catchy melodies, making it a quintessential Oh! The Ocean highlight. Frontman Dan Haggis described the new single as “An upbeat summery pop tune about going through rough patches in a long term relationship and trying to figure things out. Vampire Weekend meets Harry Styles on a cruise ship wearing really loud shirts with love hearts on.”
The upcoming extended edition of Oh! The Ocean will feature the full original tracklist alongside a collection of new songs, offering fans a deeper sonic exploration of the world the band has built. The new material includes tracks recorded with acclaimed producer John Congleton.
The trio—comprising Murph, Tord Øverland Knudsen, and Dan Haggis—is currently bringing the original album to life on their worldwide tour. This month, they are focused on a major North American tour, with dates across San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, and more.
In December, The Wombats will return to the UK for the second leg of their massive arena tour, hitting cities not covered earlier this year. This second leg, which kicks off in Edinburgh on December 2nd, is a testament to the band’s sustained momentum, which saw them headline the Radio 1 tent at Reading Festival and consolidate their rise with their first UK Number One album in 2022.
The extended version of Oh! The Ocean marks a bold new chapter for The Wombats as they continue their unstoppable journey.
