The Alan Parsons Project has announced an official re-release of their iconic 1977 album, I Robot. The new edition, which has been remastered at Abbey Road Studios, will be available on October 17 via Cooking Vinyl across various formats, including a CD, vinyl, and a deluxe box set.
A conceptual album about the "impact of mechanisation on the human spirit," I Robot was recorded at the historic Abbey Road Studios. The project featured an array of guest vocalists, including Steve Harley and Allan Clarke, and was a creative collaboration between Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson. Woolfson, who wrote the music and lyrics, and Parsons, who engineered and produced, formed The Alan Parsons Project to merge their distinct talents. Parsons was an established engineer, having worked on iconic albums like Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, while Woolfson was a gifted composer and lyricist.
The album's release was perfectly timed to capitalize on the growing sci-fi craze ignited by the film Star Wars, which debuted just a few months before the album in the US. As Woolfson noted, having a robot on their cover worked to their advantage, helping the album sell over two million copies in the US and achieve platinum status. Its most successful single, "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You," became a major hit.
The new expanded CD release will feature a 2025 remaster of the original album by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, along with four bonus tracks. The vinyl versions will also be half-speed remastered by Showell. The deluxe box set includes a wealth of unreleased material, with dozens of bonus tracks, including outtakes, demos, and alternate mixes. This new collection offers a comprehensive look into the creation of one of the most successful albums of The Alan Parsons Project's career.
