New York rockers Sunflower Bean are back with a new single, “Crashing Highs,” and the announcement of a deluxe edition for their latest album, Mortal Primetime. The deluxe version, featuring five brand-new tracks, is set to drop on October 17 via Lucky Number.
"Crashing Highs," the first taste of the expanded album, channels the raw energy of Sonic Youth with its searing guitars and crashing cymbals. The band, consisting of Julia Cumming, Nick Kivlen, and Olive Faber, describes the song as being about "chasing the past and losing grip on something that once felt huge... until it slips away completely."
Released on April 25, the original Mortal Primetime was a testament to the band’s resilience and creative rebirth. Following a three-year hiatus after their last LP, Headful of Sugar, the trio faced personal challenges and emerged with renewed purpose. The result was their first self-produced album—a powerful blend of alternative rock, psychedelia, and dreamy pop. As Cumming puts it, “You get to decide what your prime is, and you fight for it. This is ours.”
The album has already garnered widespread critical acclaim, with praise from outlets like DIY, NME, and Rolling Stone, who called it the band's "most straightforward and impactful album yet." Engineered by Sarah Tudzin (boygenius) and mixed by Caesar Edmunds (The Killers), the record showcases the band’s musical maturity and evolution.
Fans can look forward to hearing the new material live, as the band plans to bring their powerful new songs to the UK later this year. The deluxe edition of Mortal Primetime will include five new tracks, including “Crashing Highs,” further solidifying the album as a landmark release for the band.
