Water From Your Eyes are back with a vengeance, celebrating the upcoming release of their new album It’s a Beautiful Place and sharing the record’s expansive new single, “Nights in Armor.”
The album, which Matador will release this Friday, August 23, has already been praised as “a dizzying, chrome-tinted masterpiece.” Rolling Stone called it “their most joyously out-there achievement yet,” while The Guardian dubbed their previous work “a strangely addictive confection.” The duo—comprised of Rachel Brown and Nate Amos—has clearly honed their distinct sound into a work of art that is both looming and whimsical, a blend of Blade Runner and WALL-E.
The latest single, “Nights in Armor,” showcases this unique aesthetic. Built from an old riff, the track is an exercise in musical recontextualization. “I remember struggling with writing a vocal hook I was happy with,” Amos explained, “and I’m pretty sure at a certain part I reversed it and built the bass line around the backwards melody.” The result is a vibrant, swirling sonic landscape that serves as a perfect prelude to the new album. A Jo Shaffer-directed music video accompanies the single, capturing its kaleidoscopic energy.
To celebrate the album’s release, the band will be hosting a launch party and karaoke night at Rough Trade East in London on August 21. Fans can join the duo for one of their favorite pastimes ahead of their extensive European and North American tours. The UK leg of the tour kicks off on November 13 at the Village Underground in London, followed by shows in Manchester, Glasgow, and Bristol.
Having already made waves with their 2023 Matador debut Everyone’s Crushed, Water From Your Eyes has cemented their place as a pillar of the alternative music scene. They’ve supported acts like Interpol and even created their own DIY boat show franchise in New York City. Now, with a new album on the horizon, the duo is poised to venture even further into the indie rock cosmos.
