Today, rising 19-year-old singer-songwriter Leonie Biney shares her debut EP It Could Have Been Nice via Platoon. The EP features the recently released singles ‘Comedown’, ‘Love You So’ and ‘I’m Making You Coffee’, as well as the full band version of her breakthrough track ‘Beach Song’. It also follows her sold-out debut headline show at Folklore in London last week.
Following the viral success of ‘Beach Song (Demo)’ last year, Leonie has been steadily emerging as an essential name to watch, amassing over 2m views across social media and over 3m streams. The It Could Have Been Nice EP introduces Leonie as an artist who taps into the universal vulnerabilities that emerge with young adulthood.
Leonie shares: “My debut EP focuses on various relationships in life that have ended, and how they could’ve been nice had they worked out. This applies to relationships in all their forms, and details the complicated thoughts and feelings had before, during, and after these connections. These songs were written from varying perspectives during a time of my life filled with many changes and adjustments. I wanted the songs to feel as relatable as the concept, bringing light to the more melancholic feelings but ultimately bringing comfort to the listeners.”
Raised in Somerset, Leonie had always been encouraged to sing by her Ghanaian/Nigerian and Sierra Leonean/Jordanian parents and taught herself to play by borrowing her brother’s guitar, but it wasn’t until lockdown that she discovered the cathartic, therapeutic joy of channelling her inner thoughts into song.
Citing Rachel Chinouriri, beabadoobee, Jeremy Zucker and Keshi as key influences, Leonie’s current goal is to continue to hone her talents to reach a similar standard as a writer and a producer, enrolling at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Here, she discovered that the creative community around her is just as vital a part of her musical development as the course itself: the endless opportunities to perform and collaborate, the instant feedback, a city steeped in music culture.
