Multi-award-winning British pop star and actor Will Young has unveiled ‘Midnight’, the second track from his forthcoming album “Light It Up”.

One of the more poignant moments on his new album, this wistful electronic-pop number is written by Young with long-time collaborators Jim and Mima Elliot, who worked with him on his defining album “Echoes”.

‘Midnight’ plays out the inner dialogue of a single man in his forties – with a glint of Young’s humour in the tongue-in-cheek lyrics (‘Why does no one tell me they are married?’).

Will Young said: “‘Midnight’ was the last song written for the album and it happened quite unexpectedly. The song draws inspiration from being single in your 40s and how you can still not have your sh*t together! It is deliberately humorous, truthful and open - all set to a fantastic groove.”

He adds: “The video, that I directed in Mexico, is playing on the theme of being single and perhaps ‘othered’ by society. I wanted to be almost a glamorous alien alone in a disco.”

Will Young’s forthcoming ninth studio album “Light It Up” – out on 9 August via BMG – is his first album of originals in five years. Hailed as his return to “joyous pop”, the 10-track collection also features the 80s-inspired single ‘Falling Deep’.

Young said: “I really hope this is the go-to pop album for a dance, for a cry and for a celebration. I know I do all three with it. It feels empowering to write songs about what it is to be mid-40s, in a different shape, still frustrated with certain aspects of my life.”

The album sees the acclaimed singer-songwriter team up with new collaborators, pHD, the Scandinavian pop production/writing duo who has worked with Little Mix. He also reunites with Andy Cato of Groove Armada and Jim and Mima Elliot. Pre-order “Light It Up” here and visit the store for bundles and merch.

To celebrate his forthcoming new album, Will is embarking on his most intimate tour yet. The sold out “Light It Up Live 2024 Tour” is taking shape as an up close and personal evening of acoustic performances of all his hits and new songs, stories and conversation.

He said: “I’m very excited to be going to a lot of places I haven’t been. I wanted to go to smaller venues so I could properly get around the country rather than just playing the big cities.”
