2024 will be the year that L DEVINE’s undoubted potential is fully realised with the release of her long-awaited debut album‘Digital Heartifacts’ on February 2nd. It’s a record full of astutely written pop played with a vital live energy, but also one that’s unafraid to dive into life’s more unsettling emotions, albeit with her characteristic flair for self-deprecating humour and sharp observations on real life experiences. After its previous singles earned fresh Radio 1 support and a new wave of tastemaker attention, L DEVINE now shares the new single ‘IF I DON’T LAUGH I’LL CRY’.
‘IF I DON’T LAUGH I’LL CRY’ is symptomatic of L DEVINE’s ability to translate moments of relatable self-doubt and vulnerability into compelling and escapist alt-pop. Sitting on the precipice between “cracking and harmony” it’s a song that she wrote while sinking into one of the lowest and most uncertain moments of her life. And how can you hope to escape the inner confusion that circles at such a moment? Escape into a night out and turn your consciousness off.
L DEVINE says, “If I Don’t Laugh I’ll Cry’ is about the sweet spot between having a mental breakdown and total liberation. It’s a proper insight into my personality, I usually cope with my struggles and insecurities by finding humour in them. “
As with much of the upcoming album, this single was a collaboration with producer Julien Flew.
Recent singles ‘Slippin Away’, ‘Laundry Day’, ‘Push It Down’ and ‘Miscommunikaty’, have all confirmed L DEVINE’s status as a pop star to be reckoned with, living up to praise from star names such as Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, Sam Fender and Lewis Capaldi. All these songs will feature on the 12-track ‘Digital Heartifacts’ album, which is available to pre-order HERE.
After playing an intimate sold-out tour late last year, L DEVINE then showcased her ever-strengthening powers as a live performer with a live session of ‘Slippin Away’ that was filmed for Abbey Road’s Equalise programme which aims to illuminate a diverse range of queer voices across music and the wider creative arts. Her reputation as a vital new voice in the LGBTQ+ community was already established as the winner of GAY TIMES’ Elevate Emerging Star in Music award.
L DEVINE will celebrate the album’s release by embarking upon a UK headline tour in April.
