Balancing Act announce new single ‘She Plays The Theremin’
15 January 2024
Balancing Act are back with their first single of 2024, ‘She Plays The Theremin’, their catchiest track yet. Produced by longtime Balancing Act collaborator, Richard Woodcraft (Radiohead, Paolo Nutini), ‘She Plays The Theremin’ stars swinging riffs and an addictive hook, showcasing the quartet’s expertise in crafting an irresistible indie-pop banger, whilst effortlessly welcoming in the most lovable and snappy traits of punk rock classics. ‘She Plays The Theremin’ is Balancing Act’s first track of 2024, and sees them ready to showcase the fruits of their labour.
‘She Plays The Theremin’ was created during a writing trip to a studio in France, of this time away Jackson Couzens (guitar) shared:
“We found the best way for us to write is to cut ourselves off from everyone and lock ourselves away, it was just a really inspirational place to go and be creative”, Couzens adds, “The whole song was written in thirty minutes, it was one of those nice ones that just kind of falls out of the sky. With every little idea we tried, from chord changes, to riffs, to melodies, to lyrics - the first idea stuck. We demoed it in the next thirty minutes, and it was done! It was probably our favourite track to come out of those sessions.”
Becoming quickly renowned for their charged live shows and all round electric sound, Balancing Act’s recent debut headline tour saw them sell out their dates at London’s Oslo and Manchester’s Deaf Institute, before heading to Bristol and Birmingham for the first time. This tour was one of many 2023 successes on the live side – the year opened with sold out headlines at London's Lower Third and Manchester's YES Basement, before they performed for The Close Encounter Club.
On their first time playing in cities like Bristol and Birmingham, Kai Roberts (singer) said:
“Normally, our shows in London and Manchester have big crowds, but they’re also made up of groups of people that go with their mates. The people that came to see us in Bristol and Birmingham just love our music, they don’t necessarily know any of our other fans, they just turn up alone! Those people are heroes, without those people no scene starts, it takes a lot to get up and go out of the house, especially on your own - and especially to a venue to see a band. It means a lot.”
2023 brought further success by way of radio support, with Balancing Act being featured as the ‘Next Wave’ on Radio 1’s Future Artists, and their most recent single ‘Cheshire Smile’ featured on both Radio 1’s Indie Show and BBC Radio 6 as the show’s ‘Indiependence Play’. After gaining traction following their debut EP in November 2022, Balancing Act have become something of a key name in “ones to watch” discussions, being included in Dork’s Hype List, DIY’s NEU Bulletin, and branded a contender for “the new generation’s favourite band” by Jack Saunders.
Self-described as “Dark, Sexy, and Sick”, Balancing Act can be more officially affiliated with the world of alternative rock. Dynamic and atmospheric, the 3 singles released last year have marked a turn towards sonic grandeur and maturity, and the band have been gradually settling into a wider scale, cinematic delivery which suits them well.
Balancing Act are looking into the year ahead with plans to expand all sides – from live, to studio, to their community of fans. With live shows and new music both in the works for 2024, their trajectory only widens, with their prospects now set on bringing their goods to the masses.
Kai Roberts (vocals) and Jackson Couzens (guitar) first met in Manchester whilst working on separate projects. After packing up and moving to London, they joined forces with George Le Page (drums) and David Carpenter (bass), forming the now settled quartet.
