Unveiling the title of the album for the first time, VERSKOTZI shares that “SHIRING” is his mantra that he learned in 2020 when he taught himself to meditate. His adoption of meditation came exactly at the time that he decided to get sober and change the path that he was on for the better. He states that the mantra sounds like his soul being tuned to the Universe. There is also a bit of counterculture in the title’s meaning in that VERSKOTZI finds it a bit unsettling that mantras are ultimately something that is being commercialized in certain meditation practices, echoing the financial underbellies of all religions. This, mixed with his heavy critique of the systemic racism and oppression of America’s citizens by the government and capitalistic infrastructures, makes for the well rounded body of work that is “SHIRING”. Ultimately, he shares that the word “SHIRING” is a reminder that our lives are our own to find, save, and live out as citizens of the Cosmos.
In a recent interview, VERSKOTZI shared insights into his creative process and inspirations behind the new album. He emphasized that inspiration strikes from diverse sources, often unexpectedly, urging individuals to remain open to the possibilities that each moment offers. For his forthcoming album, he revealed a profound inspiration drawn from an art exhibition by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara at LACMA, which reignited his connection to folk and rock & roll music through visual art—a novel influence on his songwriting.
