Kula Shaker’s reunited and reenergised original line-up follow-up their summer hit ‘WAVES’ – with 2nd single ‘INDIAN RECORD PLAYER' due on October 13th 2023.

If ‘WAVES' was a celebration of their never-better live shows, then 'INDIAN RECORD PLAYER' is a giddy spin into the Kula Universe and their love of 1960’s Bollywood. The head nodding, hip-swinging homage, recalls their musical heroes, like composers R.D. Burman and Naushad, playback singers Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar, and classic films ‘Pakeezah’ and ‘Umrao Jaan’

Singer Crispian Mills traces the story to his early childhood, growing up near Southall in the 1970s. “A friend played me the vinyl soundtrack to Mughal-E-Azam’ which is like Indian cinema’s ‘Gone with the Wind’ and it completely blew my mind. It was like discovering another planet, another world with this incredible music.”

Indian Record Player’s Bollywood inspired video, directed by Mills, will be released in October, and also features British bhangra artist Johnny Kalsi of the Dhol Foundation.

“Bollywood loves its characters to break into song at the drop of a hat, so we did that in an English curry house. We shot the video in Johnny’s friend’s restaurant, Mumbai Junction in Harrow. We had to stop at 6pm as customers were coming in.”

The newly supercharged Kula Shaker sees the return of Hammond organ/keyboard wizard Jay Darlington, after a decade with Oasis and various Gallaghers, completing the band’s classic line-up of Crispian Mills on guitar & vocals, Alonza Bevan on bass & vocals, and Paul Winter-Hart on drums.

Mills comments “These new songs came about in a very similar way to how we recorded our debut album ‘K’ — back when we were often the support act and only had half an hour to blow people away. If you can take the listener on a fantastical ride into under three minutes, there’s a thrill and excitement in that.”

The forthcoming 7th studio album ‘NATURAL MAGICK’ will be released on 26.1.24
