Nakhane (they/them), the multi-disciplinary artist and musician from South Africa has announced their new EP ‘Leading Lines’ out now.

Ever true to Nakhane’s artistry, ‘Leading Lines’ is a revelatory and thought-provoking effort that waxes poetic on sex, morality, politics, identity and familial heritage. Encompassing 4-tracks, ‘Leading Lines’ spans sounds and influences from the worlds of pop, disco, funk and electronica in addition to native influences from Nakhane’s hometown of South Africa.

Speaking on the EP’s title and concept, Nakhane said: “In the art world, leading lines are used in compositions to point to the subject. To the main concern of the piece. This EP is doing exactly that. It’s a baton. The thing that connects what came before and what’s to come next”

The new EP comes on the heels of previously released singles ‘Tell Me Your Politik’ featuring Moonchild Sanelly and Nile Rodgers and ‘Do You Well’ featuring Perfume Genius which received rapturous critical praise and support from press outlets such as The Guardian, The Independent, Pitchfork, The Fader, Attitude, CRACK Magazine, The Observer, Nowness and a plethora of others.

To further mark the announcement, Nakhane has unveiled a new single entitled ‘My Ma Was Good’. Marrying thought-provoking subject to a wall of sound tailor made for the dancefloor, ‘My Ma Was Good’ is a sweeping and cathartic 90s inspired house track that subverts commentary on respectability politics.

‘My Ma Was Good’ is the 3rd in a trilogy of songs Nakhane has written and recorded heavily influenced by the relationship they have with their mother (after ‘Fog’ and ‘The Plague’). Speaking on the role their mother played in the song’s themes Nakhane said:

“Although she is no demure wallflower, she was still fucked over by a problematic masculinity. Here I was asking myself the question: “If my ma was good and she still got a raw deal, then why should I be good? Why should I behave? This was at a point in my life when I was toying with the villain in me”.”
