A 3CD compilation is released today celebrating the incredible six-decade career of Tony Christie - one of the most recognised and well-loved voices in British pop music.
The 70 track collection features all of Tony’s charting hits as well as a number of popular album tracks, b-sides and alternative versions and leads with the smash hit ‘(Is This The Way To) Amarillo’. Also featured are several previously unreleased songs, a number of tracks that have only ever been available on vinyl and the brand new 2022 song – ‘It’s Getting Close To Christmas’.
Still touring and delighting fans through Europe, Tony Christie’s 60 plus year career is something to truly celebrate. A national treasure and one of the most recognisable voices the UK music industry has ever produced, Tony’s career started in the notoriously tough working men's clubs of the north of England in the early 1960’s.
While working in the accounts department of a steel manufacturer in Yorkshire and singing part time, his then boss gave him an ultimatum… “Either knuckle down and become an accountant or keep trying to become the next Adam Faith”... thankfully Tony decided accounting was not for him!
After establishing himself in the clubs, in 1966 Tony was offered the opportunity to front a band - Tony Christie and the Trackers - which gave him the first experience of recording and releasing music. A year later he went on to record his first solo track - ‘Turn Around’ - which showed the first signs of what is now Tony’s trademark sound.
It was in 1971 that Tony made his chart breakthrough track ‘Las Vegas’ making it into the UK Top 30. Later that year ‘(Is This The Way To) Amarillo’ was released and charted at number one in multiple European countries. It was from this point that his career truly blossomed into what we know and love today and propelled him into Europe who embraced his British charm and charisma where he continues to play to sell out shows.
This collection represents a performer whose work ethic and dedication to his craft has never waned, an incredibly prolific artist Tony has recorded thousands of songs, released 21 studio albums, three live albums, 13 compilation albums and 75 singles.
