Musician and composer Cora Chung is an internationally renowned musician, cellist, and composer whose work spans nearly every platform. The award winning, classically trained artist has performed in concerts at leading, historic venues around the world in Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Chicago.
Cora has performed with the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra, a Taiwanese orchestra based in Kaohsiung, and the Taipei Chamber Singers, winner of fifteen international awards and one of the top vocal groups in Asia. The singers have been conducted by internationally renowned conductors like Gunther Theuring, Peter Phillips, Yan Liang-kun, and Paul Travert.
Recognized by prestigious organizations for her talent and achievements, Cora was awarded Honorary Mention for the Peer Raben Music Award, which recognizes films scores with innovative and dramatically coherent use of music and sound in relation to the narrative. The judge described her music “a fresh and courageous composition that adds an equivalent and self-confident layer to the film that it accompanies. Its unconventional combination of improvised elements from various sources provides a major contribution to the dreamlike and essayistic effect of the film.”
This year, Chung was one of only six composers selected out of 700 applicants to take part in the prestigious Sundance Institute’s Music & Sound Design Labs at Skywalker Sound. Her impressive achievements also extend to film, television and commercial projects.
She was invited by composer Victor Tang to be the featured cellist in one of his television commercial music “OWNDAYS glasses” in Japan. She was also invited to join the Liberty Band with the pop singer Alexander Anderson for their world premiere performance on KUSI Good Morning News in San Diego. Ms. Chung also composed music for acclaimed plays. With Nathan Wang, she co-composed the music for a production of “The Joy Luck Club” at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. The show was a huge hit, selling 96 percent of tickets before closing night. In its review, the Los Angeles Times described the show: “Blending hilarity and heartbreak, the play has moments both side-splitting and shattering.”
Chung scored the 2020 short film “Reflections”, directed by LA-based filmmaker Timur Bootzin. Within six weeks of its digital release, the film received more than 300,000 views. Another short film she scored “Disconnected”, directed by Traci Hays, got official selected by Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, Cine Circle Women’s Film Festival, Los Angeles Lift-Off Film Festival, and won Top Shorts Film Festival in best thriller.
In addition to live performances, Ms. Chung has been invited to participate in a number of professional workshops, including the 2016 Taipei International Choral Festival (TICF) conducting workshop with conductor Soma Szabó; the 2016 “The Orff Volumes in the 21st Century” Music Education PD Workshop with Richard Gill; and the 2015 EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Pécs (Hungary) conducting workshop with conductor Tim Brown.
Throughout her career, Cora has collaborated with leading musicians, composers and conductors, including Pianist and Conductor Robert Levin, renowned for his improvised embellishments and cadenzas in Classical period repertoire and for his recordings for DG Archiv, CRI, Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, ECM, New York Philomusica, Nonesuch, Philips and SONY Classicall; pianist Ya-Fei Chuang, a Prizewinner at the Cologne International Piano Competition at age 18; pianist Natalya Antonova, who debuted with the Leningrad Philarmonic at the age of 16 as a soloist of two major concert managements, “State Concert” and “Soviet Union Concert”, and who has concertized in Russia, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Ukraine, Armenia, and Byelorussia; and conductor Zdenek Macal, renowned in the world of classical music for his masterful interpretations and graceful conducting style who has guest conducted over 160 orchestras worldwide, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic.
