3 of the funniest songs that are also very catchy
02 May 2020
Music is a common thread that somehow binds humanity together. The real allure of music, though, is in its power to elicit myriad emotions with lyrics or sometimes just the tune of a song. A lot of importance is typically given to ballads and love songs, and more often than not, people tend to relate with them better. However, one of the underrated emotions that music can bring about is laughter and joy.
A song can be fun for several reasons. The lyrics, for example, can be way out there. There are songs with hilariously confusing lyrics or unique ones that feature famous basketball players. At times, it can be the music video that makes people laugh, and not so much anything else. In the end, what matters is if the song is catchy enough for a repeat listen. After all, there is nothing deadlier than a funny song that you want to play again and again.
Too Sexy – Right Said Fred
Right Said Fred's somewhat erotic and hummable Too Sexy is the perfect example of a "one-hit-wonder." The song came out in 1991, and you can still hear it in clubs every once in a while. The lyrics are relatively quirky with the English singer going "I'm too sexy for…" various everyday objects like a hat, shirt, car, and random stuff like Milan, Japan, and dancing. What the song might lack in the lyrics department, it makes up with a memorable tune. The other reason why the song resonated with the public was that it's easy to see the artists didn't take it too seriously, especially since they end it by singing "I'm too sexy for this song.”
Eat It – Weird Al Yankovic
“Weird Al” has been making amazing parodies of famous songs for decades now. However, the difference being that the artist never makes fun of anyone. He simply writes new, funnier lyrics keeping the original beats, and that is why they are so popular with all ages. Everyone who has heard Weird Al has their favourite parody, but one of his earliest, most famous hits was the “cover” of Michael Jackson’s Beat It. The title, though, in this case, was Eat It. Now, everyone knows that iconic beat of the song, but Weird Al's lyrics were a whole new level with things like "if it's getting cold, reheat it," "get yourself an egg and beat it," and "You haven't even touched your tuna casserole, you better chow down, or it's gonna get cold." It really is pure comic brilliance, something that'll definitely cheer you up.
#Selfie – The Chainsmokers
#Selfie, yes with the hashtag, is as ironic as it is funny. What makes it such an exciting song is that it captures the Millennial zeitgeist perfectly with lyrics that emphasise on the self-obsessed lifestyle of the new generation. While the song is mostly EDM, there are monologues in-between that are comedic in their approach as we see a young fashionista talking to her girlfriend in the bathroom complaining and saying stuff like “She’s so short, and that dress is so tacky. Who wears cheetah?” and “I only got 10 likes in the last 5 minutes, do you think I should take it down? Let me take another selfie.”
