The fourth headline show at Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park has been a sizzling summer sell-out. Headlined by the iconic Kings of Leon, the line up was formed of rock legends and the hottest alternative bands alike.
55,000 people gathered in Hyde Park to watch the fourth sold out show of the festival.
Kings of Leon stormed onto the Great Oak Stage to raucous applause. The Nashville rock band, formed of brothers Caleb Followill, Nathan Followill, Jared Followill and their cousin Matthew Followill, opened with “Over” from their most recent album Walls before taking it back to their early days with “Slow Night, So Long”.
Crowds screamed along to more recent hit “Eyes on You” and the iconic “Mary” as lead vocalist Caleb Followill exclaimed, “I don’t have to work tomorrow, so I’m going to have a lot of fun tonight. I hope you guys join us!”
As the sun set over the crowds of Hyde Park, frontman Caleb Followill added, “I also have to say… how crazy it is to be here this year on the stage with the Pixies. They were one of the biggest influences on this band. Last year we were here and we actually did a cover of a Pixies song. And to be back here and to see it live was really, really amazing.”
As captivating visuals projected across the Great Oak Stage, the group treated fans to a haunting performance of “Closer”, during which Matthew Followill lifted up his guitar to play it with his mouth.
Kings of Leon crafted a musical finale to end all sets, with the whole crowd coming together to belt out the words to their greatest hit “Sex On Fire” before drawing the night to a close with one of their newest hits “Waste a Moment”.
Before the headlining act, the legendary Pixies turned up the heat with a set full of old classics like “Monkey Gone To Heaven”, “La La Love You” and “Here Comes Your Man”, along with more recent material from their latest record Head Carrier. And the band made sure to give the audience what they wanted with fan-favourite “Where Is My Mind”.
Massachusetts’ finest rock trio Highly Suspect kickstarted the line up, followed by LA-based indie rockers Local Natives, who boasted a mellow set in the sunshine, including “Fountain of Youth” from their latest album Sunlit Youth.
Hailing all the way from Colorado was Nathaniel Rateliff + The Night Sweats, bringing their soulful sounds to Hyde Park. With a set including “Wasting Time” and “Shake” from their self-titled album, the band ended with their biggest hit “S.O.B.”, which began with an acapella introduction and ended with fans roaring along to every word.
Meanwhile on the Barclaycard Stage, Scottish indie rock band Frightened Rabbit and Deaf Havana got the crowds pumped up under the summer sun, whilst fans flocked over to the Summer Stage to watch The Cactus Blossoms and Benjamin Booker and rising stars Tom Grennan,
This ultimate indie line up attracted stars such as Princess Eugenie of York, John McEnroe, Liv Tyler and David Gardner, Peter Crouch and Abbey Clancy, Danny Mac, Ed Westwick, Mark Wright and Lily Aldridge.
