Last night, some of the biggest names in pop descended upon Malta’s historically stunning Il-Fosos Square in Floriana for the 11th Isle of MTV Malta. Tens-of-thousands of festival goers enjoyed a spectacular night of live music, with performances from RAYE, JONAS BLUE and multi-platinum selling band DNCE, topped by a mind-blowing set from headliners, THE CHAINSMOKERS.
British breakthrough artist, RAYE set the tone for the night with her beat driven single Shhh, followed by a stunning cover of Gotta Get Through This. Before completing the set, Raye treated festival goers to her current single The Line.
UK superstar DJ, JONAS BLUE followed - his lit set quite literally stunned the crowd. Firstly, wowing the audience with a rendition of By Your Side, Jonas surprised fans by beckoning RAYE onto the stage to perform their duet together before being joined by LIZA OWEN for striking renditions of Back In The Day and Fast Car. He completed his set with current single Mama, accompanied by AARON before launching into the crowd’s favourite, Perfect Strangers, with a little help from fellow brit, JP COOPER.
US pop chart toppers, DNCE were up next, opening with an awe-inspiring Star Wars intro, which both shocked and wowed the crowd. The band went on to pay homage to global music icons, David Bowie and George Michael, with covers of old-classics including Let’s Dance and Freedom, before performing their much-loved single Kissing Strangers. The visually stunning set launched confetti and Co2 jets, before thrusting huge inflatable balloons into the bouncing crowd.
THE CHAINSMOKERS helped wrap things up, opening with their massive hit Break Up Every Night amongst flame machines and confetti streamers, quickly followed by ultimate bangers Roses and Young. The night was brought to a close with their single Closer, much to the crowd’s delight.
Fans around the world were able to join in on the fun LIVE via Facebook Live (@IsleofMTVMalta) and www.isleofmtv.com. In addition to the performances and main stage action led by MTV VJ Becca Dudley, a host of behind the scenes content forming a Backstage Live stream was presented by Maya Jama. And that’s not all - a partnership with social messaging app Snapchat, made Isle of MTV Malta a globally viewable Snapchat Live Story, whilst MTV’s Snapchat Discover channel featured a wide range of content from behind the scenes footage to performance clips.
A 60-minute Isle of MTV Malta mains show special will broadcast internationally from 1st August.
This year, for the very first time the event was expanded into a week-long festival - Isle of MTV Malta Music Week. From HedKandi and Pascha to Club MTV, the festival was not to be missed – Sunday 25th in particular, the one-off return of iconic 90’s dance show, THE GRIND. Crowds from all over Malta and beyond came together at the island’s party hot spot, Café del Mar, to dance away the heat. Crowds were kept entertained with DJ sets from world class DJs, MTV's own Becca Dudley, Rewire & Varski, as well as Denmark’s Martin Jensen, alongside dance offs from crews from all around Europe.
Jumping from behind the decks to in front of the camera, the live stream was hosted by Becca Dudley and co-host, Rio Fredrika. The fun didn't stop there, with Geordie Shore's Sophie Kasaei and Ex On The Beach alumni, Josh Ritchie, hosting an exclusive boat party on a yacht just off the coast - showing an intimate group of fans how it's done!
Martin Jensen closed out the show, which streamed live on Isle of MTV Malta’s Facebook page and www.isleofmtv.com, with an electric live DJ set as fireworks and glitter cannons showered the crowds.
