Eddie Murphy is reportedly in negotiations to star as a soul singer in a fake movie documentary for Netflix.

The Beverly Hills Cop actor is in talks to play fictional '60s soul singer Murray Murray in the comedy Soul Soul Soul: The Murray Murray Story, a fake documentary-style movie for streaming service Netflix.

In the movie, Murray tries to get his old band back together in an attempt to take down hip hop music when a new artist samples their 1962 hit song.

Director Brett Ratner is reportedly in talks to take on the project, according to Deadline.com. It would mark another collaboration with Eddie after 2011's Tower Heist. He was also attached to direct Eddie in Beverly Hills Cop 4, but the sequel was dropped from Paramount's release schedule last year (15) and no new release date was set.

It was originally due to hit cinemas in March 2016 but Eddie explained that the script had to be "incredible" for him to star in it, because he thinks 1994's Beverly Hills Cop 3 was "garbage".

"I don't think it's gonna happen in March, but it is gonna be in Detroit," Eddie previously told Playboy magazine. "And before it happens, they've got to get that script right. That movie has to be right.

"Those movies, when I travel overseas, people say 'Hey, Beverly Hills Cop! Axel Foley!' They call me that s**t... All the movies I've done, and they call me that. If we do that movie, it has to be right. Not just thrown together to get a big cheque. I don't need anymore of those."

Eddie hasn't starred in many films of late. Before 2016 drama Mr. Church he hadn't been in a movie since 2012's A Thousand Words.

The fake documentary will be written by Chris Case, who has previously worked on TV series Legit and Sin City Saints.
