Demi Lovato decided to strip down for a new photo shoot with Vanity Fair because she feels “life is too short” to play it safe.

The 23-year-old Cool for the Summer singer suffered tremendous losses this year, as her dog Buddy died in July (15) and her great-grandfather Buddy Moore passed away in September (15).

Demi shot a spontaneous nude editorial with photographer Patrick Ecclesine for Vanity Fair magazine and she was inspired to do so by the deaths of her loved ones.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past day, it’s that life is too short,” she explained to the publication.

Demi’s forthcoming album Confident is scheduled for release on 16 October (15).

The songstress considers the LP her most liberating work to date and her raw Vanity Fair shoot is just an extension of the new emotional dimension she has stepped into.

“I’m about to launch an album that finally represents who I truly am,” she shared. “How do I embrace this new chapter in my life? How do I really walk the walk? What does it mean to be confident? It means letting go, being authentic, saying I don’t give a f**k and this is who I am. I want to show the side of me that’s real, that’s liberated, that’s free. What if we do a photo shoot where it’s totally raw? Super-sexy, but no makeup, no fancy lighting, no retouching, and no clothing. Let’s do it here, let’s do it now.”

Demi has been very vocal about her past struggles with addiction, self-harm and eating disorders.

The star is amazed by how far she has come in terms of personal development.

“I would have never thought that I would have ever gotten to a place in my life where I would have felt comfortable doing that,” she said in a behind-the-scenes video of the Vanity Fair shoot. “It’s empowering and it shows other women that you can get to a place where you can overcome the obstacles of body image issues. And you can feel comfortable and confident in yourself.”
