Zayn Malik has drawn a line under his One Direction days by changing his Twitter handle.

The 22-year-old star shocked fans all over the world when he announced he was leaving the band in March. Up until yesterday, his Twitter name still featured the abbreviation "1D" but now he has removed the remaining connection to Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson. His screen name reads simply "zaynmalik".

His followers reacted with outrage, sadness and denial, claiming Zayn will always be a part of the band for them.

"March 25th: Zayn Malik physically left One Direction April 30th: Zayn Malik mentally left One Direction #YouWillAlwaysBeZaynMalik1D (sic)," one emotional fan posted.

"his profile looks as empty as the band looks without him :( (sic)," another lamented the situation.

One Direction have remained positive in light of Zayn's departure, cheering up fans with frequent mentions of their next album. They are promising big things for their first record as a four-piece, with Liam even recently claiming it has an "Oasis-y" vibe.

"Great few days in the studio this week! Having a really good time writing , playing guitar parts! Exciting times (sic)," Niall posted on his Twitter page.

Louis also stayed upbeat, revealing: "Another day of writing today , really working hard on this next album . Hope you lot love it !! (sic)"

Luckily the remaining members don't have much time to stay sad between sessions in the studio and performing on their tour, which ends in October.
