Madonna has denied being banned from going backstage at an off-Broadway production after supposedly texting during the performance.
It was previously reported that the Material Girl singer had been using her mobile phone while watching Hamilton, which is the latest Broadway sensation. This allegedly led to the 56-year-old being banned from going backstage by the writer Lin-Manuel Miranda however Madonna has refuted the claims.
“It's not true. She was invited backstage four different times,” the singer’s rep Liz Rosenberg said in a statement to Us Weekly. “She texted post show when they were doing their fundraising pitch. Madonna had already made a generous donation.”
However a previous report by Playbill.com claimed that Tony-winning composer and actor Lin-Manuel tweeted a message that many saw as being directed at the Living for Love singer.
“Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage. #noselfieforyou (sic)” he wrote before deleting it shortly after.
Lin-Manuel wasn’t the only person to tweet about the situation. Actress and fellow attendee Casey Erin Clark told a very different story to what the singer said in her statement on Twitter having sat behind her during the performance.
“That time you want to smack #Madonna upside the head for texting during the best show I've ever seen. #HAMILTONpublic.”
Hamilton is about Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers. It has drawn many famous faces including Robert De Niro, Michael J Fox and First Lady Michelle Obama ahead of it opening on Broadway in July.
