Courtney Love’s relationship with Kurt Cobain has “rendered other intimacies meaningless”.

The 50-year-old singer was married to the Nirvana rocker when he committed suicide in 1994 aged just 27. Their daughter Frances Bean was 20 months old at the time and has now helped create a documentary about Kurt called Cobain: Montage of Heck. Watching it has been hard for Courtney, who hasn’t married again.

“It f**ked me up,” she told V magazine. “I remembered the sexual relationship, which, as you know, is the core of any good marriage. It almost rendered other intimacies meaningless.

“I don’t have a boyfriend right now, so I’m single. [The film] made me really evaluate what, at the age of 50, I want out of a relationship. He’s a hard act to follow. I love him and I always will.”

The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and has been praised by critics.

Courtney explained it marked a period of acceptance for Frances, who has finally been able to deal with the loss of her father. Although Courtney initially felt she’d be too upset to watch it as it contains footage of Kurt she’d not seen before, she is now pleased she did go through with it.

“So, to see it in that room with my daughter was very cathartic and I was very happy to spend a little time with him and to find out, to see things and hear audio, and see into his heart. It was an important moment of bonding between Frances and me, and I think it’s very healing for our family and for our relationship,” she explained.

“Many people who've suffered the after-effects of suicide, and in Frances’s case, like any child of suicide, she wondered what part she played in it and why wasn't she important enough?

“I think the film points out that absolutely, without a doubt, from whatever age it is that he starts talking about it, that that was where he was headed.”

Last week Frances opened up about her father and the film to Rolling Stone magazine. In the wide-reaching interview she continually referred to him as ‘Kurt’ rather than ‘dad’ and said she wasn’t a fan of Nirvana’s music, bar a couple of songs.
