Common says more people know him after Selma.
The 42-year-old rapper and actor has appeared in countless movies including Wanted, alongside Angelina Jolie, and Terminator Salvation.
But it wasn’t until his latest, Oscar-winning movie that Common has become something of a household name.
And Common said he is thrilled that the film has increased the amount of recognition he is getting.
"A lot more people know who I am," he told People.com at the premiere of his new movie, Run All Night, in New York on Monday evening.
As well as starring in the film, Common also wrote the track Glory with John Legend which features on the soundtrack and took home Best Original Song at the Oscars.
And Common adds that he is incredibly proud that Selma is the vehicle that made his name.
“It's rewarding because they come to me with love," he said. "They appreciate what I've done and the Oscar performance and the message I delivered with Selma, so I'm being known for the thing I want to be known for. That's a great thing."
Common stars alongside Liam Neeson in his latest movie, Run All Night. The film tells the story of Liam’s character, who is having to decide whether his loyalties lie with his endangered son or his mob boss best friend.
And whether he is making music or movies, Common simply wants to continue making a name for himself.
"Obviously I want to be known as a great actor and great artist," he said. "Those are things I want to keep building on."
