Merlin Ferry, the son of British music legend Bryan Ferry, is in critical condition after a head-on car crash near Shrewsbury, England on Monday night.

Merlin, 24, was extracted from the wreckage after 45 minutes by the Wellington Fire Department who reported that Ferry had “suffered multiple fractures to his legs, pelvis, left arm and had a head injury. Working with firefighters, ambulance staff very carefully freed him. He was assessed at the scene and had splints put in place along with advanced pain relief before being taken on blue lights to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham. The trauma doctor travelled with the patient.”

The gravity of the crash can be seen in this tweet from the Wellington firefighters:

According to the Daily Mail, Merlin was conscious prior to being taken into emergency surgery which his brother Otis said was on his heart. “He was conscious before he went into theatre and his biggest concern was that he had missed Christmas! He is in the best possible hospital for this type of procedure.”
