Lorde and Taylor Swift bonded over "thick-ass milkshakes".

The two stars are great friends and often chat about how close they are in interviews. Now Lorde, 18, has opened up about forming a bond with the 24-year-old pop-and-country star.

"We actually met up here in New York," she told talk show host Jimmy Fallon. "We had Shake Shack, which I feel like is kind of a good bonding… a friendship, like, bonds with those thick-ass milkshakes."

Although that was the first time the pair met properly, they had been in touch before. Taylor initiated things by giving Lorde a gift because she was so in awe of what the teenager had achieved. Lorde shot to fame with her single Royals last year and her first album Pure Heroine was loved by fans and critics alike.

"She sent me some flowers, which was so nice," Lorde explained. "She just sent them to my house and said like, 'Congratulations on everything.'"

The New Zealand-born star was stunned by the present and immediately knew she'd get on well with Taylor. It was after this that they had their meet up in the Big Apple and they have been close every since.

Lorde believes her pal is misunderstood by many, not least because the portrayal of her is usually of someone who is obsessed with men.

"She's really funny and people don't expect it," she explained. "[Her sense of humour is] really dry and you're almost like, 'Wait… did I? Is that what you just… Did that just happen?'"

The two women have become known for sticking up for each other recently, with Lorde lashing out at Diplo recently after he suggested there should be a Kickstarter campaign to "get Taylor Swift a booty" earlier this month.

"@diplo should we do something about your tiny penis while we're at it hm (sic)," she tweeted.
