Russell Brand “really enjoyed” being married.
The British comedian was husband to American singer Katy Perry for 14 months before he filed for divorce in December 2011. But despite the union not working out, the 39-year-old revealed that it wasn’t all bad.
“I really enjoyed it," he told Matt Lauer on the Today show on Monday. "Katy Perry is an amazing person.”
The former couple started dating after the 29-year-old threw a water bottle at his head from across the room during rehearsals for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. They became engaged on New Year's Eve 2009 during a holiday in India and tied the knot in the country the following October in a traditional Hindu ceremony. But Russell admits he didn’t realise the work that goes into a marriage once the honeymoon is over.
“What happened was after you get married, like anyone who's been married or come out of a relationship, you obviously have a lot of expectations," he explained. "And if those expectations don't work out, then it's probably time to grow a big beard and walk around in pyjamas. That's my advice."
After their divorce was finalised in July 2012, Russell went on to date journalist and campaigner Jemima Khan, but the pair are rumoured to have now parted. Meanwhile Katy has had an on-off relationship with singer John Mayer but the couple broke up for good at the start of the year after claims he had cheated on her. She is now thought to be dating DJ Diplo.
