Sky Ferreira worried that fame would never come to her.

The American songstress is making waves in the music world with her debut album Night Time, My Time which was released in October last year.

After several false starts, and the constant butting of heads between Sky and music execs, the 21-year-old admits she thought a singing career would elude her forever.

“I’d get in these depressions. I lived right over from Webster Hall [in New York, where she moved aged 16] and I’d see these shows going on, and I was like, ‘This is never going to happen for me,’" Sky recounted to British newspaper The Telegraph.

After first being signed at the age of 15, Sky's music has finally reached the masses.

Her sound is reminiscent of 1980s pop, with an alternative rock vibe mixed in.

Despite her grungy fashion style, Sky is actually a big fan of pop music and idolises some of the biggest names in chart music.

"I didn’t want it to sound too dirty. I like really poppy melodies – I love Madonna and Britney," she confessed.

Sky has been busy promoting her first musical offerings, which has included touring with pop trailblazer Miley Cyrus.

"It’s working for her," she says of Miley's recent headline grabbing antics. "If someone is doing it because they feel they have to do it, that’s sad. But pop music has always been provocative.”

Looking to the future Sky, who has also modelled for big name fashion houses including Saint Laurent and Calvin Klein, would like to team up with David Lynch and Debbie Harry.

But first she's ready to put her "bad streak" behind her, which includes her arrest last year with boyfriend Zachary Cole Smith for drug possession.

“I don’t want to curse myself by saying all these embarrassing career injuries are over. But once something’s done, there’s no looking back. You can’t regret it: live and learn," she advised.
