One Direction are MTV's Stars of 2013.

The band, comprised of Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, won the month-long fan-voted contest, the network announced Saturday.

According to the network, 40.8 million people voted for the quintet, helping them to top this year's list - and the band is elated by the news.

"We've just found out that you voted us top of the list for the MTV Stars Of 2013 so thank you so, so much we heard racked up over 40 million votes, can't believe the hard work, it must have took you absolutely ages. Thank you so, so much!" the guys said in a statement.

More than 117 million votes were cast in the contest, in which fans voted for their favourite act of the year via Twitter using the hashtag #MTVstars, which trended in 127 locations and clocked 50,000 tweets per minute, according to Digital Spy.

Trailing at a close second was Justin Bieber, who registered 40.4 million votes.

Ke$ha came in a distant third with 4.17 million.

Rounding out the top five are 30 Second To Mars and The Wanted with 4.16 and 3.4 million votes, respectively.
Others in the top ten include Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Rihanna and Little Mix.
