When the cast of Kinky Boots hit the pavement on Thursday at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day's Parade, they weren't expecting the negative reaction from the viewers or the positive reaction from theater goers.
The show, about the saving of an English shoe factory by switching their line to make fetish-style boots, was criticized for performing the finale at the family-friendly parade and having it broadcast in the morning hours by NBC. Still, the combination of a hit show and the extra exposure sent the box office for the week to $1,912,568, shattering the record for the 89 year old Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Even more impressive, it beat the 2012 record by How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying even with one less performance last week.
The Al Hirschfeld Theatre originally opened in 1924 as the Martin Beck Theatre. It changed it's name to honor the famous caricature artist who drew so much of Broadway history in 2003.
The show won the Tony this year for Best Musical along with Best Score for Cyndi Lauper. It was the first time in the history of the awards that a solo woman won that category.
