Demi Lovato hates secrets as they make people “sick”.

The 21-year-old says honesty is essential to a healthy life and she tries to live by that rule as much as possible.

“You’ve gotta be honest with people around you. And honest with yourself,” Demi told Teen Vogue. “When you’re having a rough day, be like, ‘I don’t want to talk about this, but I need to get it off my chest.’ If you have a secret - secrets make you sick.” Demi learned the importance of honesty after a 2010 stint in rehab. The US X Factor judge realised who her real friends were when she checked out and found just four texts waiting on her phone – despite having a party just before her treatment which several hundred of her pals attended.

The singer, who is Teen Vogue November’s cover girl, also opened up about her body image and journey to self-acceptance in the publication.

“I don’t have the body of a model or Barbie. My main thing about being in the spotlight with my fans is, I want to be real to them,” Demi said. “I have my problem areas, but I’m happy in my skin right now. I’m not going to sacrifice my mental health to have the perfect body.”

Demi is appearing on the current season of Glee as the love interest of Santana, played by Naya Rivera. She is extremely proud of her work on the show and the role she portrays.

“I’m honoured to portray a character that’s representing this chapter in our society,” said Demi. “Being true to your sexuality and yourself is becoming the norm.”
