Cult Pop Star Sinitta has joined forces with Kia Motors UK in support of Kia Walking Bus.

The national scheme encourages families to ditch the car and let their children travel to school on foot as part of an organised group accompanied by trained adults. With next Monday marking the start of Walk to School Week (21st – 25th May), the songstress is raising awareness of the initiative by taking part in the Kia Walking Bus Scheme at L’Ecole Des Petits in South London, the school that both of her young children attend.

The scheme aims to get children moving and encourage a healthier lifestyle while helping to protect the environment at the same time. Although a vast majority of children live within a 2-mile radius of their school, more than half of them are being driven to and from the school gates every day. As a result, over 20% of all traffic in the mornings is generated by the school run so Kia want to encourage families to walk short journeys rather than taking the car providing health benefits for us and the environment.

Sinitta comments on her support of the scheme: “I think the Kia Walking Bus Scheme is a great initiative. It’s a simple way to do something good for children’s health and fitness that can easily be implemented in our every-day-life. It’s also great to know that the scheme contributes to reducing emissions and road traffic and helps us to create a healthier and safer walking environment for everyone.”

Over the academic year, a single car journeying a three-mile round trip will produce 234kg of carbon emissions and with one in ten school children in Britain classified as obese, walking to school is a simple way for kids across the nation to get fit. Walking just one mile a day would burn 100 calories, equating to 19,500 calories across the school year.
