Lil Wayne’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) performance will have a “little bit” of everything.
The 28-year-old rapper has been working on his ninth studio album Tha Carter IV, which is due for imminent release. He is set to showcase his talents at this year’s highly-anticipated VMAs.
Wayne’s musical director, Gil Smith, says the unpredictable star will have something outrageous planned for his stint on stage.
"You know what? Knowing Wayne, he might just stroll across the stage on a skateboard," he laughed. "I wouldn't be surprised if he did it.
“You know, he always comes different: one day he's a rock star, one day he's a skater; he's singing R&B. I think we can expect a little bit of everything in this performance."
The rapper’s team have been working hard on the concept behind his performance. Gil says Wayne is a versatile artist, which makes the process a lot more fun.
"We've been brainstorming and taking from things that we put together on the road, so I think they can just expect a new and improved Wayne, a different Wayne," he told MTV.
Meanwhile MTV president Stephen Friedman and VMA executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic, have revealed the “time travel” theme behind this year’s show. The ceremony will play on the advanced technology available to the current generation of young people.
"We were looking at our audience and the way they interact and engage with music today, and thinking, how do we bring that to television?" said Ignjatovic. "You can go to your computer and hang with the new Kanye track, and then go to an Otis Redding track. Or listen to Katy Perry and then jump to the 70s and listen to Led Zeppelin.
"So our jumping-off point was that idea of people being able to engage with music in a timeless way, on transporting you on a journey through a space-time continuum of music."
The VMAs will be staged at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday.
