Elliott Smith's family have given full support to the police investigation into his death, distancing themselves from comments made by his former girlfriend this week.
Late last week, Jennifer Chiba, who is said to have pulled the knife from the singer songwriter's body, reacted angrily to claims that suicide is not the only possible cause of death.
Chiba assured MTV that Smith's family "knew the truth" about his last moments, days after the coroner's report was posted online, detailing apparent defence wounds to his hands.
A lawyer representing Smith's estate said yesterday that no one, including Chiba, would be allowed to speak on their behalf, as the Los Angeles Police Department continue their investigation.
"Elliott's family has every confidence that the ongoing investigation will determine the actual circumstances of Elliott's death," Conrad Rippy stated.
"Until such time as their investigation has concluded, however, and especially in light of the recently published coroner's report, neither Elliott's family nor anyone else can claim to know 'the truth' about Elliott's death, and any statement to the contrary mischaracterizes the family's position."
Chiba was moved to comment after the coroner's report implied that foul-play could have been involved in the death of Smith, who died on October 21 from two stab wounds to the chest.
The report was unable to determine whether Smith or a third party was responsible for the knife wounds.
