Soundgarden to go platinum instantly thanks to Guitar Hero

Marketing synergy has resulted in Soundgarden’s retrospective going platinum in the US before release.

Their career retrospective Telephantasm has been bundled in with copies of the new installation of the Guitar Hero videogame, called Warriors Of Rock.

This means that Activision essentially purchased one million copies of the album to add to the game, meaning that Soundgarden instantly sold platinum.

Getting a platinum record is becoming more and more rare, as music fans share music online rather than going to the store to actively buy CDs.

Wired put the achievement in perspective, noting that it took two months for the super-dedicated horde of Justin Bieber fans to buy enough copies of his My World 2.0 album to achieve platinum status.
