Gary “Mani” Mounfield will return to Primal Scream after the demise of the short-lived supergroup Freebass.
The group consisted of Mani (Primal Scream, Stone Roses), Peter Hook (New Order, Joy Division) and Andy Rourke (The Smiths) but in an unexpected move, the band recently split and have scrapped plans for their scheduled debut ‘It’s A Beautiful Life’ due out next week.
“I wouldn’t say the split was amicable, no way. There were internal problems,” Mani told The Daily Mail of the split. “Now Hooky’s gone back to his band and I’m getting back with Primal Scream. As far as day jobs go, you don’t get any better than that.”
One of the exciting things coming up in the Primal Scream world is a one off performance of their 1991 classic ‘Screamadelica’.
“We’re really looking forward to it ’cos it’s the first time the album will have ever been played in full,” he said. “I’m usually dead set against that whole nostalgia thing, but the songs are beautiful.”
The band will begin working on their as-yet-untitled tenth album soon.
As far as Freebass go, based on what Mani said on Twitter, I don't think we'll ever see them come together again. Here is a selection of tweets from the cranky bass player:
