Museum of London and Guildhall School of Music and Drama make merry and reveal the music and lives of the London Waits.

Museum of London is teaming up with William Lyons from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to celebrate the lives and repertoires of the London Wait musicians. A full study-day of entertaining lectures and wonderful music is planned for 27th of March, starting at 10.15am.

The official City musicians of the Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries were the London Waits. The London Waits were renowned musicians and the pride of the City. They ensured that music, and quite often drama, were a highlight of both civic and ceremonial occasions. The waits played in theatres including Shakespeare’s Globe and the Blackfriars Playhouse, and gave what were possibly the first public concerts at the Royal Exchange.

The study-day will consist of talks from eminent scholars, including David Lindley and Peter Holman and recitals on original instruments, shedding light on music and traditions from the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I.
