The Reading Festival opened with aplomb.

The Virgins stormed the NME stage in typically fashionable style, with Little Boots feeling grateful for the sporadic downpours which packed out the tent.

The Horrors pleased the masses with a set filled with only Portishead-produced second album tracks, which the diehard fans enthusiastically sang their hearts out to.

It was then onto the Festival Republic tent where Fight Like Apes entertained a buoyant crowd with their uplifting indie pop.

On the main stage , the uber-cool rockers Placebo played a chronological set of their new album Battle For The Sun interspersed with old favourites, but it was recent single For What Its Worth that really got the crowd jumping.

Back at the NME stage Friendly Fires put in the best performance of the day with Faith No More rounding off a great day of music, although most of the young Reading massif congregated at the main stage to see headliners Kings of Leon.

Today we await Arctic Monkeys’ festival debut of new album Humbug and other eagerly awaited acts including a rumoured performance of Dave Grohls new supergroup Them Crooked Vultures.
