JASON ISBELL AND THE 400 UNIT release their eponymous album through Lightning Rod Records on 18th May 2009.
With this album, Jason Isbell follows in the long line of musicians that have recorded at the truly legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama that include Aretha Franklin, Duane Allman, Arthur Alexander, Candi Staton, Little Richard, Bobbie Gentry, Otis Redding, Waylon Jennings, Wilson Pickett, Jerry Lee Lewis, Solomon Burke, Bettye Lavette, The Drifters, George Jones, Bobby Womack, Joe Simon, James & Bobby Purify, Joe Tex, Arthur Conley, Etta James and Bettye Swann.
Isbell is a local boy like soul heroes Arthur Alexander, Eddie Hinton and Dan Penn, and like them he mixes a soulful vocal style with songs that are passionate and unrepentant in their sense of place and direct in their stubborn Southernness. ‘Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit’ is the perfect marriage of country and soul. Hear it on songs like ’No Choice In The Matter’, ‘Seven-Mile Island’, ‘Cigarettes And Wine’ ‘The Blue’ and ‘Soldiers Get Strange’.
Isbell is a former member of the acclaimed Drive-By Truckers and this is his second release - his first with his band The 400 Unit. The 400 Unit is Derry deBorja (keyboards), Jimbo Hart (bass) and Browan Lollar (guitar). Matt Pence (Centro-matic/South San Gabriel) lends his talents as co producer, drummer and engineer. The album was co-produced by Isbell and The 400 Unit with Matt Pence. “I want it to be known that it’s a band record,” says Isbell. “I want it to be known that it’s something we all did together. Even though I wrote the songs, it was a very inclusive project.”
