KATY PERRY said it was Dave Stewart who encouraged her to kick-start her pop career.

The singer said the Eurythmics founder had given her inspiration while working with him at his recording studio in Surrey.

Speaking on This Morning, Perry said: "As well as me growing up and having all these new experiences as a young woman, I had an artistic breakthrough in Surrey with Dave Stewart.

"He said, 'why don't you write down all these things you're going through'? After that, I didn't have an edit button."

The I Kissed A Girl star said she began her career as a gospel singer and religious songs and her faith had been very important to her.

But she added that she has never regretted revealing all her personal experiences in the candid and often controversial lyrics of her songs.

Perry, 24, also revealed that the first stages of her relationship with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy, who she broke up with at the end of last year, inspired the lyrics of her single Hot N Cold.

She said he would send her a text message which would make her happy, but then she wouldn't hear from him again for another three days.

Her new single Thinking Of You is out on March 9.
