Keane have been talking to 6music about venturing into the realms of political song writing.
Their next single Perfect Symmetry is a "peace song" about war and terrorism and the band’s drummer Richard Hughes explained what it was all about:
“The lyrics are incredibly bold. It talks about terrorism and whether it’s religion or whatever excuse people use to do bad things. There aren’t many songs that tackle that because it’s a difficult thing to talk about. But nevertheless it’s us appealing to people’s better side.”
The single is out on the 29th of December and is taken from the band’s latest album also called Perfect Symmetry.
Hughes said they thought long and hard about how pitch the message in the single to their audience:
“We don’t want to preach to people and say this is what you should do and this is what you should think. But it comes from our hearts and this is where we stand and that’s the modern day equivalent.”

Modern music frequently comes under fire for its lack of political edge but Keane believe that musicians are still in a good position to take a stance on important issues. Richard Hughes said the band’s unique experiences have helped shape their view of the world. He reckons they are more than qualified to have strong political opinions:
“I guess we’re looking at things from our perspective, and we haven’t been to some of these places, but nevertheless we have opinions from the world that we see around us. We’ve spent the last few years travelling around a lot and we’ve spent a lot of time meeting people from all over the place and it’s interesting."
