Metallica's Kirk Hammett the peacemaker

If Metallica were Spinal Tap, Kirk Hammett would be Derek Smalls.

Hammett says that's an apt analogy because Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield are the fire and water of the band. Metallica's documentary, "Some Kind of Monster," shows the conflict between the band members, and Hammett says he's surprised at how many people have mentioned how he's the mediator between Ulrich and Hetfield.

Hammett says he's surprised because he's been doing that for 20 years but it's never been captured on film before. Hammett says it may be useful to have someone like him in a band, because if he had kept his mouth shut, things might have turned out worse.
