On-the-ball security guards saved Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl from an onstage attack at the Austin City Limits music festival in Texas on Sunday night when they wrestled a fan to the ground.

Dave Grohl and the band were midway through headlining the final day of the weekend festival when an audience member jumped up onto the stage and ran towards the vocalist.

After the initial shock Grohl played down the drama by telling the crowd, "He's just a drunken college dork. I've been there".

The atempted attack comes after Oasis were forced to scrap a series of gigs in North America and Europe when guitarist Noel Gallagher suffered injuries from a stage attack in Toronto.
