Santa Cruz de Tenerife witnessed an astounding fusion of science, rock, and orchestral majesty on Friday October 17, 2026, as Starmus VIII kicked off with its breathtaking "Symphony of the Stars" opening ceremony. Combining the prestigious Stephen Hawking Medal presentation with the inaugural Jane Goodall Earth Ceremony, the evening delivered an unforgettable lineup of global icons, rock royalty, and NASA astronauts under the open sky.
Keyboard legend Rick Wakeman took his place at the grand piano during the awards presentation, providing dramatic soundscapes to accompany the honors. Shortly after, Sarah Brightman made a grand entrance appearing like an ethereal vision in a sweeping white princess dress topped with a shining tiara. Opening her set with a spellbinding rendition of Ave Maria, she swept through an eclectic setlist including a haunting cover of Kansas's Dust in the Wind alongside her signature vocal version of Nella Fantasia, set to Ennio Morricone's theme from The Mission. Current Whitesnake lead vocalist Dino Jelusick then joined Brightman for a blistering duet of Phantom of the Opera that left the crowd breathless (head straight to 0:51:20 below to watch our exclusive footage).
As gentle rainfall fell across the harbor—feeling almost like a poetic cleansing—the emotional high point arrived. Decked out in a dazzling blue sparkly jacket, tenor Andrea Bocelli joined Sir Brian May for a deeply moving performance of Who Wants to Live Forever (jump to 1:01:30 to watch). Veteran astronaut Chris Hadfield picked up his acoustic guitar for Space Oddity, weaving an interstellar narrative around David Bowie's Major Tom. The Artemis astronaut crew, including Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Jeremy Hansen, watched on alongside world-renowned minds as music and outer space merged.
To cap off a legendary night, every performer returned to the stage for a triumphant finale. The entire cast united behind Brian May and the orchestra to deliver an explosive version of Bohemian Rhapsody, bringing the audience to their feet and officially igniting the festival in spectacular fashion.
