Madonna has revealed that she waited five days for Sabrina Carpenter's team to respond to her request for a collaboration.
The Vogue hitmaker and Espresso singer walked on stage together at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in Los Angeles on Sunday night to accept the Best Collaboration prize for Bring Your Love.
During their acceptance speech, Madonna took a light-hearted swipe at Sabrina's team, revealing that she waited five days for a response before sending Sabrina a message directly on social media.
"Everybody who knows me knows how impatient I am. When five days passed and I still didn't get connected with Sabrina and didn't hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me - five days - I DM'ed her," she said, as the Manchild singer looked stunned and laughed.
"And this is a true story, she answered me back and I don't know, within weeks we were in the studio together. It was fabulous," Madonna added, before praising Sabrina's professionalism.
Sabrina then took a moment to defend her team, joking that they were "s**tting themselves backstage".
"My team replies, just so everybody knows," she insisted. "They do respond to people, but I respond faster. So direct line to me is always the best way to get in contact."
The pop legend opened the show with her first VMAs performance in 23 years. Sabrina joined her for a rendition of Bring Your Love before Charli XCX made a surprise appearance for Danceteria Afterhours, her new remix with Madonna.
The bathroom stall-themed set also featured cameos from Julia Garner, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, Sombr and producer Andrew Watt.
Bring Your Love was released in April as the first official single from Madonna's Confessions II album. They previously performed it live during Sabrina's Coachella headlining set that month.
