Elton John has unveiled his family's annual summer playlist during the latest episode of his Rocket Hour show on Apple Music, featuring track selections curated alongside his husband David Furnish and their sons, Zachary and Elijah.
Speaking on Apple Music 1, the musician explained that the tracklist was established through a voting system at home, where each proposed song required at least three family votes to be included. The selection leans heavily toward high-tempo tracks, reflecting the family's preference for uplifting music during the summer months.
The collection bridges generational tastes, pairing legacy artists with contemporary electronic and dance producers.
Selections include Stevie Wonder’s "Higher Ground," Bob Marley & The Wailers' "Could You Be Loved," and Tom Petty’s "Runnin' Down A Dream." Reflecting on Petty’s catalog, John highlighted the 1989 album Full Moon Fever as one of the finest rock records ever produced.
Representing the choices of Zachary and Elijah, the playlist incorporates modern UK club releases alongside classic reggae and pop. "Free Your Mind," a collaboration between Leeds dance duo Prospa and producer Cloonee, was highlighted by John as a particular favorite of his sons.
Additional electronic and crossover tracks featured in the broadcast include Peggy Gou and Ayra Starr’s "Wo, man," Jamie xx’s "Baddy On the Floor" featuring Honey Dijon, Barry Can’t Swim’s "Return To Bhibo," and Fisher’s rework of Bob Sinclar’s "World, Hold On." The playlist also incorporates selections from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lykke Li, Groove Armada, Kacey Musgraves, Wiz Khalifa, and Role Model.
John clarified that the radio broadcast represents an abbreviated selection from a broader personal playlist used by the family throughout the season.
