The Molotovs kicked off London’s King’s Cross Summer Sounds 2026 on Thursday 13 August with an explosive headline set at Coal Drops Yard. The opening night, presented in partnership with Lightroom’s Bowie Nights, celebrated the enduring influence of David Bowie, with each act on the bill incorporating a cover of the icon's work into their performance.
Joined by support acts Ashaine White and Jack Kaye, The Molotovs delivered a high-energy show following a breakout year that saw their debut album Wasted on Youth reach Number 3 in the charts. The band paid tribute to Bowie with a rendition of "Suffragette City," a track that served as the b-side to their Top 10 single "More More More." Bassist Issey Cartlidge noted that Bowie remains a singular artistic inspiration and that performing the track always brings a frenetic punk energy to their live shows. The appearance comes ahead of their 'Welcome To Urbia' UK tour in September, which includes a second date at the O2 Kentish Town Forum on 26 September following a rapid sell-out of the first.
Sharing the stage, singer-songwriter Ashaine White performed "Life on Mars" alongside material from her debut album, highlighting the importance of free music events for creative communities. Former Magic Gang frontman Jack Kaye delivered tracks from his debut EP Go Easy alongside a cover of Bowie's "Heroes."
Running through 23 August, the free festival features a diverse lineup of folk, jazz, soul, classical, and indie artists. Upcoming highlights include a showcase celebrating 35 years of jazz charity Tomorrow’s Warriors, Americana from Little Grandad, indie pop from Len Blake, and performances from five community choirs. LGBTQIA+ platform Queer Britain and Sounds Queer will also present artists including Kimmy Beatbox and Dyan Tai, alongside traditional and progressive folk showcases from the English Folk Dance & Song Society.
The festival forms the centerpiece of the broader 'Escape in London' season at King's Cross, offering free cultural events throughout the summer.
